*Curtain Call was originally named Fringe of the Curtain and painted in 2017. I’ve been living with it and felt like it was unfinished in my intent. I revised it with my recent work in mind. An active white line of a doubled-over figure breathed new life into this 2-year-old painting, and in many ways, finally retiring it from my thoughts.

Curtain Call is a painting of my great-grandfather. I only knew him through stories that told of his strength, his ruthlessness, and his wheelchair. When I found a photo of him standing, proud. I wanted to paint him with blue hands, bloodless and cold. Somehow mad at offenses never directly committed to me. Contemplating the ways I want to remove myself from that lineage of pain.
Since living with the painting, the doubled over ghost serves as a more accurate monument to my great-grandfather. Sad, and never known.
